At the age of 87, actor Mae West is credited with coining the phrase "getting old is not for the faint of heart". As the Spring of our Hebrew calendar year 5783 begins we are looking forward to celebrating the 75th year of the modern Jewish state of Israel. And yes, to be a Zionist today means that as our Jewish state ages, we must not be faint of heart. While we celebrate 75 years of self-sovereignty, we are also watching some of the most challenging growing pains. We will be addressing the great achievements of the Jewish state and the current challenges over the coming months. Join us this Friday night as we begin to frame this discussion. On Tuesday, March 21, I will join Rabbi Lipton of Beth El and Rabbi Sasonkin of Revere Road for an important panel discussion "Why Should I Care About Israel". Please RSVP to the JCC and join us at 7pm. On the following two Wednesdays, (3/22 &3/27) you are invited to join our lunch and learn Beit Midrash small group as we learn from Israeli rabbi Benjamin Segal. Rabbi Segal will be sharing his new insights on the great story of Esther. Israel is aging and we can see that it is not easy. But with age comes experience and often wisdom. May the struggles Israel faces today prove her to be a beacon of our people and a nation the world can turn to for leadership and guidance.
