Rituals are meant to mark a moment in time, but at their best, the mark moments throughout time. This Shabbat, we are excited to celebrate Temple Israel student Ethan Scherr as he becomes a bar mitzvah. As always, we invite you to celebrate our b'nai mitzvah students by attending the Friday evening (6:15pm) or Saturday morning (10:30am) services. This week, pay particular attention to the Torah scroll Ethan will carry and read. It was given to our congregation by the Scherr family three generations ago and carries a gold plaque atop its spindles for each generation of the family that has celebrated a b'nai mitzvah in our sanctuary. Or, you could ignore the gold plaques and look around the sanctuary to see that a grandfather, father, uncle and son are all in our sanctuary, together, celebrating this sacred moment in the history of their family and our congregation. This one scroll, and the ritual reading Ethan will lead, marks a moment in time for a young man, it continues a family tradition, and it reaches back into the history of our congregation. It is a moment layered in blessings.
